History.

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN.

The James Paul Associates Partnership was established by Professor James Paul in Broughty Ferry in 1980.

James Paul studied architecture at the School of Architecture in Aberdeen before working for a large firm in London, returning to Scotland in the late 1950’s to a post in the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee. Here he worked hard to build up the Department of Architecture and succeeded in doing this to the extent that a new building was required for extra studio accommodation for the department. He was appointed to design the new building on a tight space on sloping ground at one side of the College. The building which opened in 1974 was named the Matthew Building, and is considered to be a fine example of contemporary concrete architecture – recently being awarded Listed Building status by Historic Scotland.

To this day the University of Dundee’s Architecture department is housed within the Matthew Building, inspiring many students of architecture – including members of the current JPA staff team. James Paul was appointed Professor of Architecture in 1983, and held the position of the Head of School at the University of Dundee until his retirement in 1994.

Roddy and Angus Paul, Professor Paul’s sons, both studied at the University of Dundee’s Duncan of Jordanstone College. Angus undertook a degree in Town & Country Planning, whilst Roddy a degree in Architecture.

Since the early years of the practice Professor Paul, Roddy and Angus worked full time for the office, building on an extensive portfolio of buildings across Scotland. Roddy and Angus continued the James Paul Associates Partnership up until the present.

In April 2020, the practice evolved into a new chapter, with the conversion of the existing James Paul Associates Partnership into the current form of James Paul Associates Limited Liability Partnership – and gaining a new Partner, Sam Wilson.

Sam joins Roddy in taking the practice forward and adapting to meet future challenges in the industry, while Angus remains a town planner within the practice. Sam also studied architecture at Duncan of Jordanstone, and believes passionately in creating inspiring environments and high quality buildings that respond comprehensively to their context.
