In 2020 Sam joined James Paul Associates LLP (previously James Paul Associates Partnership) with Roddy Paul and co-owns the practice. Prior to this, Sam worked for the existing partnership for 3 years as an Associate and Chartered Architect, designing and managing a number of key projects during this time. Sam has been instrumental in shaping the future direction of the practice, which he continues to do with a growing JPA team on ever more ambitious projects, nationally. He is a passionate creative designer, and innovation plays a key role in his work. Sam designs 'from the inside-out' and prides himself on producing simple, elegant and thoughtful design solutions to complex and challenging projects.

Sam has designed a number of major projects across different sectors, from multi-million pound historic refurbishment projects to prominent high rise residential developments. With particular skills in the Education and Civic sectors, Sam has taken the lead in our work for Stirling University, designing both the ambitious Campus Gateway and Civic Link projects.

Prior to working for JPA LLP Sam worked for a global architectural practice, and brings with him the skills gained from his work on major international projects, including the RIBA Award winning £145 m Mann Island project in Liverpool. He has a personable approach and prides himself on building strong working relationships with clients to better design for their aspirations and requirements, which he feels is essential to achieving successful buildings.

Sam studied Architecture at the University of Dundee, completing his Masters degree with distinction and was awarded Best in School in that year. He was later awarded the RIAS Silver Medal for Architecture and shortlisted for the RIBA Silver Medal. When not sketching, Sam enjoys hillwalking with his wife and Westie in Angus. He is also a motorsport fanatic and lover of motorcycle and bicycle touring.
